Solar Installations in the IDP Resettlement Camp

Six decades of armed conflicts in Kachin state resulted in over 158,000 people having to flee violence and rebuild their lives.

This resettlement compound was built in February 2020 in northern Kachin to provide shelter for displaced families.

Located in an off-grid region, the compound consisted of 26 homes and 2 community spaces intended to house internally displaced persons (IDP).

In March 2020, our team installed 28 solar home systems, bringing solar energy to 26 homes and 2 community spaces over the course of 7 days.

After introducing ourselves to the families, we began distributing the materials, with the help of the families.

Then, we started the installations.

It took our team nearly a week to finish the installs, averaging 5 installations per day.

Each Solar Home System consist of

  • 180W Solar Panel

  • 12V100Ah Battery

  • 4 LEDs & USB Charging Capabilities

They were designed to keep the lights on for 6 hours every night on a full charge.

After installation,

our team took the time with the families to explain each component, walk them through normal operation, and provide safety instructions.

We’re honored to do our part for the families as they are rebuilding their lives. And we are proud of our ability to bring light into the homes of families who would otherwise still be living in darkness.

After 2.5+ years, 80% of our systems are still working without having to replace a major component from the original installation. Our team is still doing periodic spot check to ensure the systems are operating as planned. Majority of the damages were caused by the flooding of the homes during the monsoon seasons.

We’ve made some notable improvements to the design of our Solar DC Home System since this installation. Read the latest iteration of our Solar DC Home System here.
